After nearly two decades of bringing together BBQ lovers, beer enthusiasts, cyclists, and music fans from across the region, the Independence BrewBQ committee has announced that this year’s festival—scheduled for Saturday, August 23—will be the last.
What started as a small gathering has grown into one of Independence’s most beloved summer traditions, drawing thousands of visitors annually for mouthwatering barbecue, a wide variety of craft brews, and unforgettable live music. The festival has been held every August since 2006 with the exception of 2020 due to pandemic restrictions. For 19 years, BrewBQ has celebrated community, hospitality, and heart—all while raising funds for local causes. Over $90,000 of festival proceeds have been donated to designated non-profits over the years!
“We’ve always said that BrewBQ was about more than just barbecue and beer,” said Jenny Hughes, board member of Independence BrewBQ. “It was about showcasing the spirit of Independence, building connections, and giving back. Making the decision to conclude the festival wasn’t easy, but after 19 amazing years, we believe it’s the right time to close this chapter with the same energy and pride that’s defined the event since day one.”
This year’s farewell festival promises to be the most memorable yet, with a fun day of BBQ competition, bike riding, craft beer sampling, and live music. Fans of the event are encouraged to come out and celebrate all the joy, flavor, and friendships that BrewBQ has fostered over the years. Entry into Riverwalk Parks is free for all ages to listen to music with the option to purchase food and beverages. A separate Craft Brew Zone pass purchase is required to enter the 21+ zone for sampling.
“We’re incredibly grateful to the sponsors, volunteers, vendors, and attendees who’ve made BrewBQ possible,” Hughes added. “Your support made this festival what it is, and we can’t wait to raise a glass with all of you one last time.”
